This new First+Main office building in downtown Portland integrated extensive rooftop landscape with a highly sophisticated rooftop terrace that would serve as an amenity for office inhabitants. Completed in early 2010, the project was developed by Shorenstein Properties with GBD Architects as lead designer, along with Gerding-Edlen Development. Jason King* of TERRA.fluxus was part of the design team (while working at GreenWorks PC) providing design and project management for this terrace. The design process was interactive, working closely with the developers and architects to create this rooftop oasis in the city. (all images taken by Jason King)
The roof also provided significant contributions to attaining LEED Platinum status through provision of urban habitat, open space, stormwater management, and water use reduction. The roof will achieve net-zero potable water use through a high efficiency irrigation system fed but a 75,000 gallon cistern. Hoffman Construction was the general contractor for the project, using Snyder Roofing and Teufel Landscape as subcontractors for waterproofing for the entire building and installation of the roof terrace walls, planters.
